Oxford, Al. – The SCAD women’s cross country team opened up at the JSU struts where they were the lone NAIA team competing with NCAA D1 and D2 teams. The Bees finished second overall in the women’s white division (non D1 teams) out of 10 teams. Emily Kearney finished 2nd overall in the entire race which included 9 D1 teams such as Georgia Tech and Alabama to name a few. Kearney navigated the 4K course in a time of 14:14.7. Rounding out the top 5 for the Bees were; Katie Clarke (15:13.2), Kalie Demerjian (15:22.6), Olivia Babeu (16:04.5) and Maddie Mullen (16:23.0). The final two Bees to cross the line were Gabrielle Robinson (18:27.7) and Faith Dickey (20:15.4) Katie Gerrard had to pull out of the race due to an injury.
“I was pleased with the way Emily ran today. She put in the work over the summer and as good as she was last year, she looks even stronger in 2017. As for the team, we only had 3 training sessions together before this race and only one was a hard session so the thought process of this race was to go out and get a good hard effort in. With that being said, we were effected with Katie Gerrard not being able to finish as any team would be without a sub 18 min. 5K runner out of their lineup. I am confident if the team can stay healthy we will improve each week,” commented Coach Caldwell. The Bees hit the road again in two weeks to compete at the North Georgia Invitational on 9/16/2017 in Gainesville, Ga.
